Lincoln County

County in south-central New Mexico; area 12,515 sq km/4,832 sq mi; population (1990 est) 12,200. Its capital is Carrizozo. A livestock grazing area irrigated by the Rio Hondo, it has coal mines and parts of Lincoln National Forest and the Sacramento Mountains.

Lincoln County War

In 1878 a rivalry between two local merchants exploded in the brief Lincoln County War, in which combatants included Billy the Kid, who was eventually killed by county sheriff Pat Garrett.
