Lindsey, Robert Bertie, lst Earl of (1582-1642)

English admiral. He joined the Spanish expedition of the earls of Essex and Nottingham, and was present at the capture of Cadiz in 1597. In 1628, after the Duke of Buckingham was assassinated, he was appointed admiral of the fleet. He reclaimed parts of the Lincolnshire fens.

He was the eldest son of Peregrine Bertie and godson of Queen Elizabeth I. He was knighted in the market-place of Cadiz after its capture.
