Lindsley, Philip (1786-1855)

US Protestant clergyman and educator. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1804, and, after his theological studies, he received a Presbyterian license to preach in 1810. He returned to Princeton to assume both teaching and administrative duties before becoming president of the newly chartered University of Nashville, Tennessee (1824-50). He shaped this institution into a strong undergraduate college while advancing higher education throughout the region. He accepted the presidency of the New Albany Theological Seminary in Indiana in 1850 and remained there until his death. Lindlsey was born near Morristown, New Jersey.
