Also found in: Acronyms, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.03 sec. |
linear motorType of electric motor, an induction motor in which the fixed stator and moving armature are straight and parallel to each other (rather than being circular and one inside the other as in an ordinary induction motor). Linear motors are used, for example, to power sliding doors. There is a magnetic force between the stator and armature; this force has been used to support a vehicle, as in the experimental maglev linear motor train. How to thank TFD for its existence? based company produced four of this season's new coasters, all based on linear induction motor technology. Since the researchers originally designed the linear induction motors to accelerate objects at extremely high velocities--up to 6 kilometers per second--speeds of 200 to 300 miles per hour would come easily. The new linear induction motors in the S-L 300 eliminate drive belts, oiler, gearboxes, chains, and related equipment, drastically reducing the maintenance requirements and operational costs while increasing companies' overall productivity. |
