Lingard, John (1771–1851)

English historian. In 1811 he began work on his History of England. The first two volumes appeared in 1819 and the last in 1830. Its accuracy and detachment have preserved its importance as a standard history.

He was born in Winchester, and was educated at the English Roman Catholic College at Douai. He was vice-president of Crookhall College, near Durham 1795–1811. His first book was The Antiquities of the Anglo-Saxon Church (1806).
