Lingen

City in Lower Saxony, Germany, on the River Ems, 65 km/40 mi northwest of Münster; population (2005 est) 51,300. Lingen is a centre for oil refining and natural-gas production from local wells, and also contains chemical, steel, and clothing industries. One of Germany's largest nuclear power stations is located nearby.

The old town of Lingen, with its 17th-century town hall and market place, once had a university founded by Prince William III of Orange.
