Linlithgow

Town in West Lothian, Scotland, 28 km/17 mi west of Edinburgh; population (2001) 13,400. Linlithgow Palace, now in ruins, was once a royal residence, and Mary Queen of Scots was born there.

The palace, with 13th-century origins, dates in its present form from the 15th to 17th centuries. It is a quadrangular building, with a tower at each corner. It overlooks Loch Linlithgow, which is 1.6 km/1 mi in length.
