Linz

Capital and industrial river port of Upper Austria, in northern Austria, on the River Danube; population (2001) 270,800. Iron and steel production is a major industry powered by locally sourced hydroelectricity. Other activities include metalworking, furniture-making, and the manufacture of electrochemicals and clothing.

Linz is situated mainly on the right bank of the river; the northern suburb, Urfahr, is on the left bank. It is the seat of a bishopric, and has a fine modern cathedral, several baroque churches, and a baroque provincial Landhaus (assembly house).There is a small airport at Linz-Horsching.

History

The city was heavily bombed during World War II. The composer Anton Bruckner (1889–1945) lived for a time in Linz, and the German dictator Adolf Hitler spent his schooldays here.
