Ranjit Singh (1780–1839)

Indian maharajah. He succeeded his father as a minor Sikh leader in 1792, and created a Sikh army that conquered Kashmir and the Punjab. In alliance with the British, he established himself as ‘Lion of the Punjab’, ruler of the strongest of the independent Indian states.
