Barrymore, Lionel (1878–1954)

US stage, film, and radio actor. Brother of Ethel Barrymore and John Barrymore, he was known as a fine character actor. His film career included 15 Dr Kildare films and You Can't Take It with You (1938). He worked primarily in radio after he was confined to a wheelchair, and he was known to listeners in the 1940s as The Mayor of the Town. He was perhaps best known for his annual radio portrayal of Scrooge in Dickens's A Christmas Carol.
