Lipchitz, Jacques (1891-1973)

Lithuanian-born sculptor. He was active in Paris from 1909 and emigrated to the USA in 1941. He was one of the first cubist sculptors, his best-known piece being Man with a Guitar (1916; Museum of Modern Art, New York). In the 1920s he experimented with small open forms he called ‘transparents’. His later works, often political allegories, were characterized by heavy, contorted forms.

The Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia, has many of his early works.
