Lipovšek, Marjana (1946– )

Slovenian mezzo-soprano. She studied in Graz and sang at the Staatsoper, Vienna in 1979, and at the Bavarian State Opera from 1983, as Konchakovna (Prince Igor) and Fricka. She created Emilie in the 1981 first performance of Cerha's Baal at Salzburg and returned there as Rosa Sacchi in the first performance of Penderecki's Die schwarze Maske (1986) and as the Nurse in Die Frau ohne Schatten (1992). Roles at the Bregenz Festival have included Dalila and Carmen. She made her London debut in 1988 (in Das Lied von der Erde) and appeared at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 1990, as Clytemnestra, under Solti. The same year she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York as Fricka. She has also appeared as a recitalist at Salzburg, Hohenems, and at the Wigmore Hall, London.
