Lipton, Martha (1916- )

US mezzo-soprano. She studied at the Juilliard School and sang in concert from 1940. In 1941 she appeared at the New York City Opera, as Tchaikovsky's Pauline, and from 1944 at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, as Siebel, Amneris, Maddalen, and Hansel, a role in which she gave almost 300 performances. She sang at Carnegie Hall in 1952 in Wolf's Der Corregidor and at Chicago in 1956, as Herodias. She gave many concert appearances.
