Lisa, Manuel (1772–1820)

US fur trader. Active in the St Louis fur trade, he built Fort Manuel in present-day Montana and Fort Lisa near present-day Omaha, Nebraska (1812). He was a leader of the Missouri Fur Company from 1808 and was sub-agent for the American Indian peoples along the Missouri River (1814–20). Lisa was born in New Orleans, Louisiana.
