List, Wilhelm (1880–1971)

German field marshal. In World War II, he commanded the 14th German Army in Poland in 1939 and the 12th Army in France in 1940, and was then promoted to field marshal. He led the southern wing of the invasion of Greece and Yugoslavia in 1941. Moving to the Eastern Front, he commanded Army Group A in the Caucasus in 1942 but was dismissed in September 1942 for failing to obey Hitler's directives. He was convicted of war crimes at Nürnberg 1945 and served 5 years of a life sentence.
