Litani

River rising near Baalbek in the Anti-Lebanon Mountains of eastern Lebanon, 144 km/89 mi long. It flows northeast–southwest through the fertile Bekaa Valley, for which it provides irrigation water, and continues east to the Mediterranean 8 km/5 mi north of Tyre. Israeli forces invaded Lebanon in 1978 and subsequently withdrew as far as the Litani River.

Likud party chief Binyamin Netanyahu, who was soon to replace Peres as prime minister, demanded that Hezbollah be "dismantled," and his two top lieutenants, Ariel Sharon and Rafael Eitan, called for Israel to expand its occupation zone in Lebanon north to the Litani River.
Many of those who remain were at least pushed--more or less--out of the area south of the Litani, at least temporarily.
In a televised interview on August 27, Nasrallah said that Hezbollah had "committed" not to show any military manifestation of the group south of the Litani River.
