Litchfield County

County in northwestern Connecticut, at the New York and Massachusetts borders; area 2,385 sq km/921 sq mi; population (1990) 174,100. Litchfield is its capital. It is agricultural and also has some manufacturing, especially in Torrington, Thomaston, and Winsted. There are many resorts on its lakes, along the Housatonic River, and in the Litchfield Hills.

The county has a number of state parks and forests, and is a popular commuter and holiday retreat.
