lithification

Conversion of an unconsolidated (loose) sediment into solid sedimentary rock by compaction of mineral grains that make up the sediment, cementation by crystallization of new minerals from percolating water solutions, and new growth of the original mineral grains. The term is less commonly used to refer to solidification of magma to form igneous rock.
