The surrounding sediment was partly lithified just below the seafloor surface, but burrows remained unlithifled because their fill material had different porosity and permeability (Coniglio, 1999). Recent archaeological finds of both historic and aboriginal cultural artifacts have been found associated with these well lithified Miocene exposures. The Earth's oldest glacial rocks (mid-Proterozoic) were reported from Gowganda in northern Ontario (Coleman, 1907) and in 1906 Albrecht Penck introduced the term tillite for ancient lithified tills. |
