Little Falls

Township in northeastern New Jersey, on the Passaic River, 5 km/3 mi southwest of Paterson; population (1990) 11,300. Largely a residential suburb, it also has laboratories and manufactures such items as machinery and rugs.

In an area purchased from local American Indians in 1711, Little Falls grew with the opening of the Morris Canal in 1831. During its history it has been a resort, a freshwater pearl centre, and an agricultural trade centre.
