Little Tennessee

River flowing through Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, USA; length 217 km/135 mi. It rises in the Chattahoochee National Forest in northern Georgia and flows through Tellicoe Lake into the Tennessee River.

Course

From its source it flows north through Macon County, southwest North Carolina, to Franklin, then winds northwest and through Fontana Lake, impounded by the 146-m/480-ft-high Fontana Dam, a 1945 Tennessee Valley Authority facility. It then flows into the state of Tennessee, past Chilhowee Dam and Lake, into Tellico Lake. This lake is impounded by the Tellico Dam (1979), which regulates the Little Tennessee's flow into the Tennessee, opposite Lenoir City.
