She established the Theatre Workshop in 1945 and was responsible for many vigorous productions at the Theatre Royal, Stratford, London, 1953–75, such as A Taste of Honey (1959), Brendan Behan's The Hostage (1959–60), and Oh, What a Lovely War (1963).
