Litvinov, Maxim (1876–1951)

Soviet politician, commissioner for foreign affairs under Stalin from January 1931 until his removal from office in May 1939.

Litvinov believed in cooperation with the West and obtained US recognition of the USSR in 1934. In the League of Nations he advocated action against the Axis (the alliance of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy), and as a result was dismissed just before the signing of the Hitler–Stalin nonaggression pact of 1939. After the German invasion of the USSR, he was ambassador to the USA 1941–43.
