Ljubljana

Capital and industrial city of Slovenia, near the confluence of the rivers Ljubljanica and Sava; population (2002) 275,300. Products include textiles, chemicals, paper, and leather goods. It has a nuclear research centre and is linked with southern Austria by the Karawanken road tunnel under the Alps (1979–83).

History

Founded by the Roman emperor Augustus in 34 BC, it was taken by the French in 1809 and made the governmental seat of the Illyrian Provinces (part of Napoleon's empire) until 1813. It then came under Austrian rule and was ceded to Yugoslavia in 1918; Slovenia gained its independence in 1992.

There is a medieval castle, a cathedral, and a university (1595).
