Leishmania amastigotes were found in 32 bone marrow aspirates, 3 liver biopsy specimens, 2 splenic aspirates, and 1 skin biopsy specimen.
Nuclear single-photon emission CT (using tagged red blood cells) and percutaneous liver biopsy of the lesions revealed no evidence of malignancy.
Of course, I had a liver biopsy immediately, as the liver biopsy is the most reliable way to diagnose the stage of liver disease.
