Livingstone

Capital of Southern Province, Zambia, lying on the northern bank of the Zambezi River at the frontier with Zimbabwe; population (1998 est) 95,800. Lying near the Victoria Falls, the city's main industry is tourism. Hydroelectric power the falls supports the industries of motor vehicle assembly and sawmilling, and the manufacture of furniture and blankets.

Founded in 1905, when the Victoria Falls Bridge and railway were completed, it was named after the Scottish explorer David Livingstone. It was capital of Northern Rhodesia 1907-35.

Other tourist attractions include the Livingstone Museum, containing archaeological and historical material, Lake Kariba, Livingstone Game Park, and Kafue and Wankie national parks. Livingstone has an international airport.
