Livonia

One of the former Baltic States, divided in 1918 between the modern states of Estonia and Latvia. Livonia belonged to the Teutonic Knights from the 13th to 16th centuries, to Poland from 1561, Sweden from 1629, and Russia from 1721.

Livonia

City in southeastern Michigan, 24 km/15 mi west of Detroit; population (1990 est) 100,900. It is largely dependent on the car industry, and has large General Motors and Ford assembly plants as well as factories producing parts.

The city also manufactures paint and tools and dyes. It is home to Madonna College (1947) and Schoolcraft College (1961).
