Llanquihue, Lake

The largest freshwater lake in Chile, in the southern lakeland region. The lake covers an area of some 520 sq km/201 sq mi. The volcanoes of Osorno and Calbuco rise near its shores. Around the lake are resort towns such as Puerto Octay to the north, Frutillar to the west, Puerto Varas to the south, and Ensenada to the east. Fishing, water sports, and skiing contribute to the tourist industry in this area.
