Lleida

Capital of Lleida province in Cataluña, northeast Spain, situated on the River Segre, 132 km/82 mi west of Barcelona; population (2001) 112,200. Industries include leather, paper, glass, and cloth production. It has Roman remains and the ruins of a 13th-century cathedral.

Lleida was captured by the Roman general Julius Caesar in 49 BC. It has a palace of the kings of Aragon.

Province of Cataluña, northeast Spain; area 12,028 sq km/4,644 sq mi; population (1991 est) 351,800. It borders France and Andorra in the north, and stretches from the Pyrenees to the River Ebro. The lowlands have been irrigated by means of canals, and produce large quantities of fruit. Exports include wine, wool, and cattle; there are also textile industries. The capital is Lleida.
