Lloyd, Robert (1940– )

English bass. He made his debut in London in 1969, in the first version of Fidelio. He appeared at Sadlerouths Wells 1969–72 and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London from 1972 as Banquo, Sarastro, Fiesco, Philip II (in the French version of Don Carlos), and Boris (a role he repeated at the Kirov Opera in 1990 and at the Vienna Staatoper in 1991). He has guested in Aix, Paris, Boston, San Francisco, and Milan and also been heard on the concert platform, in lieder (especially Winterreise) and oratorio. He appeared as Gurnemanz in the Syberberg film version of Parsifal and in 1988 sang this role at Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where he returned for the first UK performance of Massenet's Chérubin and as Frère Laurent in Roméo et Juliette, in 1994.
