Lloyd's Register of Shipping

International society for the survey and classification of merchant shipping, which provides rules for the construction and maintenance of ships and their machinery. It was founded in 1760 by customers of Edward Lloyd's coffee house in London.

Lloyd's, based at Southampton, England, from 2006, is governed by a large committee representing ship-owners, ship-builders, marine engineers, and underwriters. The society also provides independent risk assessment services. The register book, published annually, contains particulars of all known sea-going ships of 100 tonnes/98 tons gross and over.
