Lloydminster

City straddling the border between Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada, 217 km/135 mi east of Edmonton; population (1996 est) 19,000. It is the commercial and industrial centre for a region with abundant natural resources and agricultural products, and the oil industry is the largest single employer.

There are gas and oil wells, wheat fields, cattle ranches, and salt-extraction operations in the area. The city itself has dairy cooperatives, oil refineries, and asphalt plants.

History

Founded in 1903 by around 2,500 British religious settlers known as the Barr Colonists, it was divided in 1905 with the creation of Alberta and Saskatchewan. The Alberta side was incorporated as a village in 1906, and the Saskatchewan side incorporated as a town in 1907. It was unified in 1930, and incorporated as a city in 1958.
