Lobe, Johann Christian (1797-1881)

German flautist, composer, and writer on music. He wrote five operas, which were produced at Weimar, Germany, where he was a member of the court orchestra.

He studied at the expense of the Grand Duchess of Weimar, Maria Pavlovna, appeared as a solo flautist at Leipzig in 1811, and then joined the court orchestra at Weimar, where his operas were produced. He left in 1842 and four years later became editor of the Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung in Leipzig; he also published several books on music.

Wittekind (1819), Die Flibustier (1829), Die Fürstin von Granada (1833), Der rote Domino (1835), and König und Pächter (1844).

Orchestral and chamber

two symphonies, overtures; piano quartets.
