Lobito

Port on Lobito Bay, Angola; population (2007 est) 219,900. It is the terminus of the Benguela railway, which links Lobito with the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Zambia copperbelt, and the port of Beira in Mozambique. Lobito is a main outlet for mineral exports from Zambia and the Congo, including copper, tin, cobalt, manganese, uranium, and zinc. From central Angola the port exports sisal, cotton, coffee and sugar, as well as iron and hides and skins. Port industries include sugar and rice mills, and cement works.

The town dates from 1824 and expanded after the completion of the railway in 1929. It has a natural harbour protected by a sandspit 5 km/3 mi long. The harbour has deep water and is considered one of the best on the west coast of Africa.
