Locarno

Health resort in the Ticino canton of Switzerland, on the north shore of Lago Maggiore, 22 km/14 mi southwest of Bellinzona; population (2000) 14,600. It is situated on the St Gotthard route. Formerly in the Duchy of Milan, it was captured by the Swiss in 1803. The Pact of Locarno, a series of diplomatic documents guaranteeing French security, was initialled here in 1925.

The ancient abbey of Madonna del Sasso is a place of pilgrimage. The population is mainly Italian-speaking and Roman Catholic.
