Lock Haven

City and administrative headquarters of Clinton County, north-central Pennsylvania, on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, 35 km/22 mi southwest of Williamsport; population (1990) 9,200. It produces light aircraft, paper, and brick, and has some agriculture. It is the seat of Lock Haven University (1870).

Settled in 1769 on the site of Fort Reed, it was a major 19th-century lumbering centre and a port on the Pennsylvania Canal.
