Lockhart

Community in central Florida, a suburb of Orlando, just northwest of its city limits; population (1990) 11,600.

Lockhart

City and administrative headquarters of Caldwell County, south-central Texas, 43 km/27 mi south of Austin; population (1990) 9,200. It is an agricultural trade centre with some light industry.

It was founded in 1848, and was on the Chisholm Trail in the 1870s. Just northeast, in Lockhart State Park, is the site of the Battle of Plum Creek (August 1840), a victory by Texans over raiding Comanches.

I had two elder brothers, one of whom was lieutenant-colonel to an English regiment of foot in Flanders, formerly commanded by the famous Colonel Lockhart, and was killed at the battle near Dunkirk against the Spaniards.
