Locri

Ancient people occupying two separate districts of Greece. West Locris was a region north of the Gulf of Corinth, bounded on the north by Doris, on the east by Phocis, and on the west by Aetolia. East Locris was bounded on the north by Malis, on the east by the Euboean strait, on the south by Boeotia, and on the west by Doris and Phocis.

The northern part of East Locris was inhabited by Epicnemidian Locri, the southern part by the Opuntian Locri, whose chief town was Opus. About 683 BC colonists from East Locris founded a city on Sephyrium, a promontory in the ‘toe’ of Italy. This was the first Greek settlement to receive a written code of laws, given by Zaleucus about 664 BC. The inhabitants of West Locris, the Ozolian Locri, were less civilized than the East Locrians, and do not appear in history until the Peloponnesian War.
