Lodge, Henry Cabot, II (1902–1985)

US diplomat. He served as the US representative at the United Nations 1953–60. He was the Republican Party's unsuccessful candidate for vice president in 1960. During the Vietnam War he was ambassador to South Vietnam 1963–64 and 1965–67, and President Nixon's negotiator in the peace talks of 1969.

Born in Nahant, Massachusetts, he was a grandson of Henry Cabot Lodge. He was educated at Harvard, and worked as a journalist. Serving in the Senate 1937–44, he was re-elected in 1947 but defeated by J F Kennedy in 1952. He was also Dwight D Eisenhower's presidential campaign manager in 1952. In the Vietnam peace talks 1969, he replaced Averell Harriman.
