Logan, Joshua (Lockwood III) (1908–1988)

US theatre and film director, actor, and playwright. He studied at Princeton University and at the Moscow Art Theater under Constantin Stanislavsky. He directed a series of hit plays and musicals including Annie Get Your Gun (1946), Mister Roberts (1948), which he cowrote, South Pacific (1949). On the latter he also cowrote the book and directed the film adaptation.

Logan was born in Texarkana, Texas. In the late 1920s organized a summer stock company on Cape Cod that launched the careers of actors such as James Stewart and Henry Fonda. He began to direct and act on Broadway as well as work on Hollywood movies but his hectic schedule led to a nervous collapse in the early 1940s from which he recovered in time to serve with the US Air Force Combat Intelligence in World War II. He directed several successful films, including Picnic (1955), Bus Stop (1956), and Camelot (1967). In 1977 he acted and sang in his own nightclub show at the Rainbow Grill in New York City.
