Loiret

French river, 11 km/7 mi long, rising near Olivet and joining the Loire 8 km/5 mi below Orléans. It gives its name to Loiret département.

Loiret

Département in the Centre region of France; area 6,742 sq km/2,603 sq mi; population (1999 est) 618,100. There is a large forest around Orléans, the administrative centre. The Loire valley in the south, in spite of the occasional floods, is an important agricultural area, and wine, wheat, barley, sugar beet, vegetables, and fruit are produced. There are also rubber, iron, preserved foods, mechanical, electrical, and other industries. Other towns include Montargis and Pithiviers.

Loiret is formed from parts of the former provinces of Orléanais, Berry, and Ile-de-France. The châteaux at Sully-sur-Loire and Chilliers-aux-Bois attract tourists.
