Loja

Town in the province of Granada, southern Spain, on the River Genil; population (1991) 20,800. Products include salt, textiles, paper, and cakes (roscos). It was one of the last strongholds of the Moors in Spain.

Loja

Capital of Loja province in southern Ecuador; population (2001) 118,500. The town lies close the international border with Peru, which was adjusted in 1942. Sub-tropical agriculture, such as the growing of chinchona (the base for quinine) and stock-raising are the principal economic activities. Two universities, an airport, and a radio station are sited in the town.

Loja has been rebuilt twice after earthquakes, the last of which occurred in the 1880s.
