Lombard, Alain (1940- )

French conductor. He studied at the Paris Conservatory and made his debut with the Pasdeloup Orchestra in 1961 (although he had already worked with the orchestra as a violinist, in 1951). He worked with Lyon Opera 1961-65 and led Massenet's Hérodiade in concert at New York in 1963. In 1966 he conducted Faust at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at Salzburg 1966. He was music director of the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra 1966-74; Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra 1972-83; and the Opéra du Rhin at Strasbourg 1974-80. He also conducted opera in Paris 1981-86 and from 1988 worked in Bordeaux, where he led Die Zauberflöte in 1992.
