Lombardi, Vince(nt Thomas) (1913-1970)

US football coach. As head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 1959, he transformed a losing team into a major power, winning the first two Super Bowls in 1967 and 1968. His last coaching position was with the Washington Redskins 1969-70.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Lombardi was educated at Fordham University. He was an assistant coach at Fordham 1947-48 and West Point 1949-54, after which he entered professional football as offensive coach with the New York Giants. The Vince Lombardi Trophy is awarded to the winning team in the annual Super Bowl.
