A Sasak potter in Masbagik village, Indonesia. The Sasak are the largest ethnic group on Lombok, one of the Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia.

Island of Indonesia, east of Java, one of the Sunda Islands; area 5,435 sq km/2,098 sq mi.; population (2000 est) 2,500,000. The chief town is Mataram. It has a fertile plain between northern and southern mountain ranges. The mountain ranges are volcanic in origin and rise at Mount Rinjani to 3,726 m/12,224 ft. The island has become a popular tourist destination.

The native plants and animals are more closely related to Australian than to South East Asian species. Near Mataram, the port of Ampenam is the site of Mataram State University, which was founded in 1963.
