Lomonosov

Town in the Leningrad oblast (region) of the Russian Federation, 40 km/25 mi west of St Petersburg; population (1990) 42,000. The town has an early 18th-century mansion, with parks and gardens, built by the German architect Schadel for Prince Alexander Menshikov (Peter the Great's principal advisor). After Peter's death, Menshikov was exiled and the estate passed to the imperial Russian family. Catherine (II) the Great added further buildings at Lomonosov, including a lavish Chinese Palace.

After World War II, Oranienbaum was renamed in honour of the 18th-century poet, astronomer, and chemist Mikhail Lomonosov.

Lomonosov made the next step in the development of naval sciences in Russia by publishing, in 1759, his work Dissertation on Greater Accuracy of Navigation.
From 1949 through the late 1980s, the front generally lined up with a submerged mountain range called the Lomonosov Ridge, which runs from northern Greenland toward eastern Siberia, passing close to the North Pole.
