Lomonosov Ridge

Submarine mountain range running from North Greenland to Novosibirskiye Ostrova (New Siberian Islands) and dividing the Arctic Ocean into two basins. The range was discovered by Soviet scientists who, since 1937, had been researching how floating sea ice drifts. Echo sounding equipment was used to measure the thickness of the ice and the depth of the water beneath it. Regular monitoring subsequently furnished the scientists with a map of the seabed.
