London, Meyer (1871–1926)

Polish-born US lawyer, politician, public official. A specialist in labour law, he became active in leftist politics and helped found the Socialist Party of America. Elected to the US House of Representatives as a socialist representative of New York (1915–19, 1921–23), he fought for labour reform and other progressive causes. He initially opposed US participation in World War I. London was born in Suwalki, Poland. He emigrated to New York City in 1891, and working by day and studying at night, earned admission to the bar in 1898. He was killed in an automobile accident.
