London

City in southwestern Ontario, Canada, on the Thames River, 198 km/123 mi southwest of Toronto and 200 km/124 mi west of the Niagara Falls; seat of Middlesex County; population (2001 est) 336,500; population of metropolitan area 432,500. The centre of a farming district, it is an administrative and financial centre and has tanneries, breweries, and factories making hosiery, locomotives, automobile components, radio and electrical equipment, leather, and footwear.

History

London was founded in 1826 on a site reserved for settlement in 1793 and incorporated as a city in 1854.

Features

The city is the seat of the University of Western Ontario (1878). A Shakespearean theatre festival is held in Stratford, about 30 km/18 mi to the northwest of the city.
