Enfield

Town in Hartford County, north-central Connecticut; population (1990) 45,500. It is situated 28 km/18 mi north of Hartford, on the east bank of the Connecticut River, and near the Massachusetts state line. It includes the industrial subdivisions of Thompsonville (population 8,500) and Hazardville (population 5,200). In the 19th century it produced carpeting and gunpowder. Today, many residents commute to jobs in Hartford or in Springfield; local products include plastics, greeting cards, tools, and gauges. A monument marks the site of a famous 1741 Jonathan Edwards sermon.
